The .tel Extension, a Universal Business Card
Registration for .tel extension domain names starts December 3. The new extension has been approved by the ICANN, the organism that manages the Domain Name System (DNS).
What is the .tel extension? Don´t we already have a .mobi extension?
The .tel extension allows any individual or company to collect all of its contact information in one place at one easy to remember URL. As opposed to the .mobi and other existing extensions, companies or individuals with .tel need not configure a mobile-friendly or computer-friendly website in order to make contact details available. The.tel extension serves as a directory, rather than a website, and offers users a multi-media business card!
Vanksen.tel will be the one-stop shop for all Vanksen contact details: telephone numbers, fax, e-mail addresses, mailing addresses, websites, Skype, and the list can go on. This is explained by the fact that the .tel extension is the first to fully make use of the DNS possibilities. All contact details integrated into the .tel directory will be stored by the DNS and will be accessible from any Internet connection, without being required to use a Web navigator.
By making use of dedicated Plug-ins, instant messaging service users should be able to quickly access a .tel page in order to obtain contact details. It will also be possible to update, in real time, the information provided by the .tel directory.
In order to better imagine what such a domain name could mean for your company, we recommend you take a look at this example offered by the .tel registry. Other examples are also available at jonathanjensen.tel, richardahlstrom.tel, david.tel, etc.
How and when to register a .tel?
British Telnic (www.telnic.org) is the organization responsible for the .tel domain name sales and it has organized several different registration periods:
December 3 – February 2
“Sunrise” period reserved for brands (a minimum 3 year registration requirement).
February 3 – March 23
“Landrush” period in which companies or individuals can apply for a .tel domain name. Applications for company names will be granted only for a minimum of 3 years in order to discourage cyber squatters and other speculators.
March 24
Registration opens (registration good for one year)

Question. Isn’t .tel just another extension? Couldn’t it be used like any other website? .com, .net, .org
I’ve seen nothing as to format and architecture…
I can see a well known brand creating a .tel website, Disney.tel, but other than that, what’s the use?

Hello Serr.biz,
The domain name .tel can not be used as a .com, .net or any other one.
That’s true that the .tel is especially for brands, institutions, associations and famous people.
If your surname is available in .tel, it could be a nice URL for a business card!
