Google’s R&D Centers in Europe

Google employs more than 5,000 people worldwide, among them some of the most experienced teams of specialists in the sector. By creating about a dozen R&D centers in Europe and the Middle East, the company is able to recruit talented staff locally.

What happens where?

Google Center Zürich, Switzerland: message services and piracy

This center was created in January 2008 in order to develop message services and anti-spam filters, but also to fight click fraud, to work on the development of Google Maps and on anti-piracy measures for YouTube.

Google Center Dublin, Ireland: webmaster services and SEO

The Dublin Center, created in 2003, is the second biggest Google Center in Europe and also the company’s European headquarters. It aims to enhance services for webmasters, especially SEO related services. It also takes care of optimizing the Google Help Pages.

Google Center London, Great Britain: mobile applications

Together with the center in Munich, Germany, the London center is dedicated to mobile applications (mobile phones); for example, the mobile version of Google Maps and Google Checkout (a Paypal competitor). It is also dedicated to improving Google’s mobile phone search engine. The results are to be adapted to the location of the mobile web user. Another team is working on Google’s advertising platforms: Google TV Ads and Google Print Ads.

Google Center Trondheim, Norway: Google News development

This center takes care of developing European versions of Google News and “Knol,” Google’s collaborative publication website. It’s a kind of Wikipedia where everybody who wants to write articles can.

Google Center Aarhus, Denmark: virtual machines for application speed

The engineers in Aarhus work on developing virtual machines that reduce the waiting time for search engine searches.
