Internet and dictatorship

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006 by Sylvie Rouen

The Belarus dictator Alexandre Loukachenko has “officially” won the presidential elections last Sunday, with 83% of the votes. In February he had announced a law that forbids the Belarus inhabitants to use the Internet! Indeed, only the government agencies and the companies, as well as some privileged persons are going to be able to connect to the Internet via the Belarus “.by” domain name country extension (ccTLD).

With the manipulation of the single and public Telecom operator, the dictator has great chances to achieve his goal of muzzling the media and destroy the free speech of the Belarus people.

This is a sad example on how the Internet can be used as a politic tool to influence the free speech of a population.
